A slip disc can cause pain or numbness in the legs and feet when it compress the nerve. Surgery is needed if symptoms do not respond to medications and physiotherapy or if patient has severe leg pain, weakness or numbness and impaired bowel or bladder function. There was no associated weakness but he was not able to stand or get up due to unbearable back pain. He was taken to a nearby hospital where an MRI was done. MRI showed L1 burst fracture.
