Autologous Stem Cell Transplant for disorder such as myeloma, lymphoma & certain autoimmune disorders

An autologous stem cell transplant is a procedure that uses person’s own stem cells to replace the cells that have been damaged by various disorders such as Myeloma, Lymphoma and certain autoimmune disorders. A network of Hematologists, bone marrow transplant surgeons, physicians and paediatricians are involved in providing super-speciality care to the patient.

Matched Sibling Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation for disorders such as acute & chronic leukemia, aplastic anemia, thalassemia

Many a times there is non-availability of a matched donor for a patient and certain disorders such as acute and chronic Leukemia, aplastic anaemia and thalassemia usually thrive well on donor bone marrows such as form siblings which is called Matched sibling stem cell transplantation. An integrated team comprising of haematologists, transplant surgeon, physician and the paediatrician is involved from patient care throughout the cure process as well as the care of the donor until recovery and beyond.

Haploidentical or half match transplant from parent or child when a matched sibling is not available Matched Unrelated Transplant through worldwide donor registries

Less fortunate ones who donot have a matched donor either from the parent or their sibling usually die due to lack of donors for a cause treatable with bone marrow transplant. Access to the new worldwide network with a bone marrow registry enables to search for a compatible donor for such patients. Such matches can be haploidentical or half a match for the recipient. Such a facility is enabled in our hospital.

Chemotherapy & targeted therapy for a number of blood cancers

Leukemia, myeloma, lymphoma are some of the most common types of cancers that affect the hematopoietic system of the human body. Chemotherapeutic drugs are annti-cancer agents that target the cancerous cells and destroy them by inhibition of mitosis or cell division and growth promoting agents. There are many chemotherapeutic drugs of varying potency, targeting different types of cancer. Our skilled oncologists assess our patients and determine the right drug with dosage for treatment of their cancers.

Management & counseling for non-cancerous blood disorders such as thalassemia, aplastic anemia, iron deficiency anemia, immune thrombocytopenia

There are many disorders of the blood that increase the mortality and morbidity of humans which are not cancerous in origin. Such disorders occur due to disorder in the hematopoietic system leading to abnormal or inadequate synthesis from the bone marrow. Such disorders are namely,

  • Thalassemia – a Genetic disorder where the haemoglobin synthesis is grossly hampered in various degrees.
  • ApalsticAnemia – Where due to some primary cause, mostly, the bone marrow stops to produce all types of blood cells – RBC, WBC and platelets.
  • Iron Deficiency Anemia – Where the haemoglobin is inefficient in carrying oxygen in the blood due to decreased concentration of iron in the body.
  • Immune-mediated thrombocytopenia- A disorder where body’s own cells attack the platelets leading to their deficiency.

Such diseases are very hard to comprehend for a layman and more difficult for the patient to go through without being able to understand what is happening to him, Our counsellors make sure the patient is well educated and informed regarding their condition, treatment and complications, and the do’s and don’ts while undergoing the treatment. Our team of skilled haematologists provides our patients with the best plan of management.

Pediatric Hemato-Oncology and BMT

Children can get afflicted by a variety of blood disorders and cancerous conditions. Fortunately, as compared to adults, the incidence of cancer in children is much less and the cure rates are much higher. However, in absolute numbers, the magnitude of this problem is not small and about 75,000 children in India are diagnosed with cancer every year.

Children are not miniature adults. The diseases that are found in children and their treatment are fundamentally different from adults, particularly cancer. Thus, sick children suffering from cancer need and deserve specialized care from pediatricians who are especially trained to care for such children. Our center is one of the very few centers in India capable of managing all kinds of childhood cancers. We have a team of internationally trained pediatric hemato-oncologists who are widely experienced in diagnosing and treating some of the rare cancers and blood disorders of childhood.

We understand the vital role that parents and families play in such situations. Receiving such news can be devastating at the outset. We recognize the importance of educating parents, understanding their challenges and developing plans through a shared decision-making process with them. It is important to understand that with proper protocolized care, a majority of children can actually be cured and go on to live normal lives.

Services:

Inpatient and out-patient cancer care:

A dedicated oncology ward and a chemotherapy day-care is manned by competent nurses who are well-versed with chemotherapy administration and care of central venous access devices (line care). Our oncology nurses are experienced in handling these tiny souls with utmost compassion and care.

Multi-disciplinary cancer care:

Many of the tumours in children need integrated care from multiple specialties dealing with cancer care. At Jaypee Hospital, we work as a team with radiation oncologists and pediatric surgical oncologists to provide multi-disciplinary treatment, using internationally recognized protocols. Special care is taken in planning therapy for young kids, so as to avoid short and long-term side effects, whilst providing the appropriate intensity of treatment to cure them.

Bone Marrow Transplant unit:

A state-of-the-art bone marrow transplant unit is one of the assets of our institute, helping us serve those children for whom bone marrow transplant is the only cure. Jaypee Hospital has a dedicated 6-bedded BMT unit with HEPA filters. Our unit has performed a large number of complicated transplants for a variety of disorders such as immunodeficiencies, thalassemia, sickle cell disease, aplastic anemia and leukemias. We work closely with national and international donor registries to secure the best possible donors (Matched Unrelated Transplants) for children who are unable to find a suitable family donor.

Diagnostics:

Our well-equipped laboratories and expert pathologists help arrive at a prompt diagnosis using sophisticated investigations like flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry and other molecular/genetic tests. We have one of the best interventional radiology and nuclear medicine department, with on-site PET-scan. Also, there is a molecular lab for HLA typing, which helps us expedite identification of stem cell donor for children needing bone marrow transplant.

Blood bank support:

A 24 x 7 functional blood bank with an advanced immunohematology lab and molecular lab services of international standard, provides uninterrupted and safe, NAT-tested blood transfusion support. All kinds of apheresis such as platelet apheresis, therapeutic plasma exchange and leukepharesis for stem cell harvest etc. are routinely carried out our center.

Pediatric intensive care (PICU):

In childhood cancer care, children can often become sick. Our state-of-the-art PICU and its experienced team is instrumental in recovery of these patients. We collaborate with our PICU colleagues for providing sedation and immobilization to our young patients during invasive procedures like bone marrow aspiration and lumbar puncture.
